It is no gainsaying that one female candidate contesting against six (6) strong men in an election is a herculean task. A task that may require the strength of a Hercules, and Esinam Afi Seade, Miss ECOWAS 2013, went through unscathed last week to win this year’s University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC) General Election.
The first round of the election was held on Thursday, April 21, 2016, in which none of the seven (7) contestants were able to secure 50%+1 votes resulting in a runoff. The run-off election, held exactly a week ago, saw Esinam come face-to-face with Emmanuel Adu Amofa, her sole male contender this time around.
At the end of the electoral process, Esinam Afi Seade polled 3,655 votes representing 53.67% to beat Emmanuel Adu Amofa, who garnered 3,206 votes representing 46.73% of the total valid votes cast in the presidential runoff election, making the former the victor of the election.
Thus, Esinam Afi Seade and Richmond Dompreh, her vice presidential candidate would be at the helm of students’ affairs for the next one year in the premier university.
Just after she was declared the winner, the smiley dimple-faced damsel was convoyed to the SRC Union Building where she had a tumultuous reception. She addressed a gathering of students outside the building and thanked the university community for their support.
“I will like to thank all of you for voting for us. I thank you all for believing in me and my team. We are definitely going to bring a lot of change into the SRC. Thank you all”, she said gleefully.
The Level 300 student of English and Psychology was then whisked away by her cronies in a six vehicular procession amidst singing, jubilation and honking. There was an ambiance of Jubilation on Legon campus last week Thursday.
Esinam’s victory has made her the second female student to be voted as the University of Ghana SRC President after Louise Carol Donkor broke the jinx in 2007.
