Young persons in the Zongo communities and other deprived parts of the country will soon be able to access scholarships to go and study medicine in Cuban institutions.
This followed Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s request to his Cuban hosts during bilateral talks when he visited the Caribbean country last week.
Under the arrangement which was accepted by his Cuban host President Miguel Diaz-Canel, 40 scholarships would be made available to students from the aforementioned areas every year.
The gender sensitive programme which will start next year will be extended to 20 male and 20 female students, DAILY GUIDE has learnt.
The Cuban President said his country has over the years demystified the training of doctors which should not be the preserve of the elites. As a result of this, the Caribbean country has 80,000 doctors on its roll.
He said Cuba is ready to support the gesture of the Ghanaian government in having brilliant but needy students from the deprived areas access education.
The training of the doctors and other professionals from poor communities will not only lift them out of poverty but also provide important role models for other children in the communities.
