PARAMOUNT CHIEFS in the Bono Region have expressed worry about the high rate of teenage pregnancies in the region and therefore appealed to the regional coordinating council and queen mothers to intervene.
President of the house, Osagyefo-Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, who is also the Paramount Chief of Dormaa Traditional Area, expressed the sentiment during the first general meeting of the house in 2021 in Sunyani.
The meeting was witnessed by the Bono Regional Minister, Justina Awo Banahene and members of Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
In his welcome address, Osagyefo-Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu bemoaned the teenage pregnancy situation in the country, especially in Bono Region, which has one of the highest number of cases. “Teenage pregnancy is a huge problem in the region,” he noted in a speech to the house.
Replying, Justina Awo Banahene expressed the same sentiment and said prostitution was gaining grounds in Sunyani, the Bono regional capital.
“Girls these days line up on some streets of Sunyani looking for suitors to engage in sex. Sunyani is not noted for this. Due to this, they tamper with streetlights to enable them to ply their game in darkness. The police have already started clamping down on them and I urge them to do more to rid the streets of these harlots,” she stated.
She pleaded with nananom to play vital roles in instilling Ghanaian cultural values such as decent dressing to minimise the rising incidents of promiscuity among the youth.
Dormaahene also used the opportunity to talk about other challenges facing the region, including chieftaincy, land litigation, bad roads, accessibility to health care, water, among others and appealed to the government through the RCC to fix them.
The house also expressed worry about the re-opening of the Sunyani Airport, saying the delay is negatively affecting trade in the region.
