A policeman allegedly captured in a video recording bragging about taking bribes has been charged for extortion.
Sergeant Augustine Owusu-Ansah was charged with extortion, contrary to section 151 (1) of the Criminal Offences Act 29 (1960).
The Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Oppong, told the media that the green light had now been given by the Attorney General’s Office to prosecute the offending policeman.
The policeman who is currently facing service enquiry by the Police Administration was in May this year seen in a viral video, taking monies from some civilians at Assin Fosu in the Central Region to help them perpetuate their criminal activities.
In the said video, the policeman boasted about freeing criminals who were arrested by his colleagues during operations after he received cash from them.
He also indicated in the video that he had ways of helping criminals to operate with impunity. His action brought public backlash compelling the police hierarchy to interdict him.
“The docket was forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Department for advice and it came out that General Sergeant Augustine Owusu-Ansah should be charged and prosecuted at the Circuit Court in Cape Coast,” he added.
She gave an assurance that the police would give regular updates on the case as the trial proceeds.
