TECHNICAL ADVISOR at the Youth & Sports Ministry, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, is optimistic Ghana will return home from this year’s African Games in Morocco with more medals compared to the last edition.
His optimism stems from the massive investment in quality athletes by government for the African Sports Festival, which is scheduled for August 19 to 31.
And with a contingent of 139, 91athletes, 29 coaches and 19 officials, Ghana will be taking part in 14 disciplines, which include football, judo, karate-do, badminton, cycling, hockey and table tennis at the Games.
In a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, officials of the technical sub-committee under the International Games and Competitions Committee (IGCC) indicated that they were focused on efficiency, hence reducing the number of athletes to 91 for the competition.
When Congo Brazzaville hosted last edition’s two years ago, 300 athletes participated and won eleven medals, including two gold medals.
“I can assure you that we would win more medals in Morocco. Expect it. We are going with quality not quantity and I can assure Ghanaians they’ll get value for their monies,” Dr. Owusu Ansah said.
The athletes are currently in a residential camp at the Cape Coast Stadium ahead of the biennial competition.
Team Ghana is expected to fly out of Ghana exactly a week today, however, the football and the volleyball teams will depart next Tuesday.
