Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has taken
delivery of 20 desktop computers and a multipurpose photocopier to equip its
operations room and other offices at the Regional Headquarters of the Greater
Accra Regional Command (GARC).

The donation follows a request the
Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi, made to the
Ministry of the Interior to ensure a well functioning operations room of the
GARC in order to effectively combat migrant crimes in the region.

The computers and the photocopier were made
available to the GIS by a philanthropist through the Ministry of the Interior
as part of efforts aimed at retooling the GIS by the government.

Handing over the items to the GIS, the Deputy Minister
for the Interior, Henry Quartey, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP) for
Ayawaso Central Constituency, reiterated the commitment of President Akufo-Addo
to retool the security services.

“The role of GIS as the first line of defence
at the frontiers means it needs to be resourced and empowered to provide
effective and efficient migration management in the country,” he added.

The deputy minister lauded the management of
the service for the tangible transformation the GIS was experiencing as a result
of exemplary leadership. He also commended officers of the GARC for their clean
and tidy appearance and for staying at post when he paid an unannounced visit
to the command with the CGI.

He indicated that officers of the GIS would
soon be serving at Ghana’s Diplomatic Missions abroad to issue visas, as this
was in line with international best practices.

The MP urged the officers to attach
professionalism to their work, hoping that the support given by the government
would motivate them to work harder so that the GIS would take its place and do
what was expected of it.

Mr. Takyi expressed his gratitude to the ministry
and admonished personnel at the GARC to take proper care of the computers and
ensure good maintenance culture when refurbishment of the Regional Headquarters
was completed.
