Black Stars striker Caleb Ekuban has apologised for his penalty miss in Ghana’s loss to Tunisia in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghanaian hearts were once again broken after Tunisia secured a penalty shootout win over the Black Stars in the round of 16 of the tournament.

Following what was a tensed 1-1 draw after both regulation time and extra time, the North African side triumphed in the shootout.

Ekuban was the only Ghanaian player to miss, as his weak penalty was saved by Tunisia goalkeeper Farouk Ben Mustapha.

The 25-year-old’s miss proved to be Ghana’s undoing, as Tunisia netted all their penalties to emerge 5-4 winners.

The Trabzonspor forward has since come in for criticism from a section of Ghanaians in the aftermath of the Black Stars’ exit.

However, Ekuban has taken to Twitter to apologise after his penalty miss cost Ghana a place in the quarter-final of the tournament.

“I’m really sorry,” he posted on Twitter, accompanied by an emoji portraying sadness and disappointment.

The loss to Tunisia means the Black Stars’ wait for a major trophy continues, with Ghana having last won a trophy 37 years ago.
