As Ghana marked this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nasara Coordinator for Bolgatanga Central, Alhaji Abu Fuseini, has called on the leadership of Zongo communities to pay more attention to the development of their women and girls.
According to him, the achievements of many great women from the Upper East Region in particular are clear indications that women can achieve whatever they want to, so long as there is a deliberate effort to empower them.
Alhaji Abu Fuseini in an interview with the DAILY GUIDE said, “Today, look around, we see that our children spend more time with their mothers because their fathers are always out to work for the family’s daily bread. So, if these mothers are not empowered to be knowledgeable, resourceful and religious, what will they be telling our children? If our women are empowered, we can be sure that our children will be empowered in various areas.”
He advised parents in Zongo communities to prioritise the education of their children, including the girl child, saying education has become the driving force for every country, and the Zongo communities cannot deny their children education.
“Government has introduced free SHS, and we in the Zongo communities must take advantage of this policy to develop our youth to become resourceful adults in future. Sometimes, people say free SHS has problems, but my brother, even with the challenges, it is better to go to school under this free SHS than to stay at home,” he stressed.
Touching on women in politics, Alhaji Abu, as affectionately called, urged more women to be bold to contest for political positions, and for political parties and functionaries to also support women in their parties to take up leadership positions.
