In recent times, a local so-called celebrity has virtually gone berserk, throwing tantrums at her compatriots most of them in politics.

Without considering the merits or otherwise of the often harsh and emotionally-driven remarks, we wish to point out first and foremost that in Ghana, our values are paramount in all that we do.

We do not find it amusing as do like-minded compatriots the tendency to humiliate our compatriots with outstanding pedigree.

We should all be custodians of our heritage as our chiefs are already doing in varied ways, one of which is the preservation of our values. Should we use social and traditional media to pour invectives and cast aspersions on others? Of course we should not when especially, we do not have evidence about what we put out on the public domain.

In a particular instance in which a prominent politician has been at the receiving end of a string of invectives and accusations, the target turned to the court to seek redress, and to have the character attacks stopped.

In civilised societies, the court is the centre for seeking redress and for injunctions on verbal attacks, but such a resort notwithstanding, the nonsense persists and we should scream out about the aberration.

Seeking fame or infamy through such crude and non-Ghanaian values do not appeal to most people. It is nauseating for a lady to talk about instances of coituses they have had with their existing or former partners regardless of the circumstances. The contrary is becoming the norm now in our society even as our elders grumble in silence over the social anomalies.

Their no-holds bar approach to their attacks is something for which we demand a national conversation on.

Giving vent to the avoidable vituperation is providing the so-called celebrities with the oxygen to go on and on. Isn’t it time to pull out the oxygen duct from such noise?

Unfortunately, the anomalous conduct will attract some youthful ones and that is the snag about it all.

The tendency for such so-called celebrities to be adopted as role models by some members of the younger generation should attract the attention of those who have the future of this nation at heart.

Last week, two politicians, both from the ruling party and the opposition, were subjected to unceasing string of accusations. We could only wonder whether there was going to be an end to the litany of invectives then and now.

When we listen and allow those who engage in the string of insults to continue on the tangent, we too are contributing towards the destruction of our values.

The nonsense must stop now.
