Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Government
is set to set up an entirely new university in the northern part of the country
devoted to the study of medicine.

This
would not only increase the number of medical doctors in the country, but also
reduce the pressure that usually exists in medical schools.

It
followed a personal request made by President Akufo-Addo to the King of Saudi
Arabia.

Vice-President
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who made the announcement in Accra
yesterday, said: “The King of Saudi Arabia has responded positively and there
is a plan to build a medical university in the northern part of Ghana as well
as 42 secondary schools.”

He,
therefore, stressed the need for those in that part of the country especially
from Zongo communities to take advantage of the situation by pursuing science-related
courses so that they can ultimately acquire medical education.

This
was during a Muslim prayer session at the Independence Square as part of events
to mark the Eid Adha celebration yesterday.

He
also stressed the need for those in the northern part of the country to take
advantage of the Free Senior High School programme to help wipe out ignorance,
poverty and diseases from Zongo communities.

“Let
us, therefore, take the education of our Muslim girls seriously”, he said,
insisting “it is not just a societal imperative; it is a passport to Jannah.”

The
Vice-President took the opportunity to urge Muslim youth across the country to
take advantage of all the training programmes being rolled out by the Ministry
of Inner City and Zongo Development to equip themselves with the skills
necessary for making a meaningful contribution to national development.

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, prayed for President Akufo-Addo, Vice-President Bawumia and members of government for knowledge, wisdom and understanding to be able to steer the affairs of the nation.
