The NDC regional office at Amakom, Kumasi, last week

Police in
the Ashanti Region have started guarding the regional office
of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prevent it from being
attacked by some disgruntled party members.

We shall maintain few policemen
here,” Chief Supt. Ameyaw Afriyie, the Manhyia Commander, remarked on Monday
concerning the NDC office.

His comments came few hours after
supporters of Masawudu Mubarick, who has been disqualified from the NDC race, stormed
the party office.

“The police will also intensify
patrols around the premises of the NDC office at Amakom until the situation is
brought under control,” he said.

Recent Attacks

In less than a week, the NDC office
has been attacked on several occasions by some angry party youth from the Asawase
Constituency.

During the first attack, party
executives were chased away, car tyres were burnt and the party office was
locked up with padlocks by the agitated youth who wanted the party to reinstate
Masawudu Mubarick.

In the second attack, which occurred
on Monday, all the prominent people in the party in the Ashanti Region were
locked in by the youth. They then started to burn car tyres and also disrupted
an ongoing party meeting at the time. The timely intervention of the police
helped to restore normalcy.

Police Action

Chief Supt. Ameyaw said it was
important that the police kept surveillance at the place in order to prevent
something nasty from happening at the NDC office.

“We are also cautioning them against
doing anything untoward to disturb or mar the peace of the entire city,” the
police chief sternly warned the NDC youth.

He, however, did not state whether the policemen that would be temporarily stationed at the NDC office would be in uniform or not.
