The late President Atta Mills
THE SEVENTH anniversary of
the sad passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills has been marked with
a wreath laying ceremony in Accra.
The ceremony held at the
‘Asomdwee’ park in Accra was in honour of the man popularly referred to as
“Asomdweehene”.
It was attended by the
public and mainly politicians and members of the opposition National Democratic
Congress (NDC).
Former President John
Dramani Mahama, flag bearer of the NDC, in memory of his late boss, described
Prof. Mills as “a man who stood for the highest ideals of leadership.”
He said in a speech which
was read for him by NDC Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo that the late Prof Mills elevated
the Office of the President above the rising bitterness of partisan politics
and redefined presidential morality.
According to him, the
country is indebted to Prof. Mills for his commitment and channelling the right
path for other political leaders to follow.
Mr. Mahama reiterated that Prof.
Mills did not compromise with the truth and always had the interests of
Ghanaians at heart.
“President Mills believed in
the rule of law, and respected the primacy and interests of the Ghanaian
people. He supported the integrity and independence of our national institutions.
He was empathetic and kind, and measured success by the welfare of the least
among us,” he said.
He added “Prof. Mills eschewed avarice, and led by the example of his uncommon humility and simplicity. His graciousness extended even to those who vilified and maligned him, and he wore their respect as a medal of honour. I am greatly indebted to Professor Mills for the opportunity to learn at his feet, for the impact he had on my political life and the great lessons in national over partisan service”.
